Must Have Camera Accessories

Must Have Camera AccessoriesNo matter your lifestyle, a camera is more than just an accessory. Cameras have become part of our everyday lives. They are the way we capture our memories and document our lives.

A camera case is a must-have for anyone who takes photography seriously.

When choosing a camera bag, Hampton Photo Arts recommends a small bag designed for sleek digital point and shoot cameras as well as older film cameras. A small case protects your investment and also provides a convenient place to carry media and batteries. Always have more media with you than you will use, and always carry spare batteries. The picture of the century may be dependent on you having the equipment to shoot it.

Another must have is a lens cleaning kit. In this era of megapixel wars, don’t forget that the lens is still the most crucial element of image quality. NASA’s Hubble scientists can attest to this. If space is limited consider a lens cloth. They’re small enough to fit along side your camera in any case. If you have a larger case definitely upgrade to one of our kits that include cleaning fluid, brushes and swabs.

While you’re thinking about caring for you lens, you might want to think about protecting the LCD viewing screen on your digital camera as well. Choose a kit that  includes 10 protector films. Apply the first one at home and keep additional films in your camera case for later use.

No camera case is complete without additional lenses and filters. Supplemental lenses can allow your present lens to focus closer for small objects or magnify distant objects, effectively making your lens longer. Colored filters can provide a variety of special effects and enhance your picture taking experience. Consider a polarizer for deeper, blue skies or to eliminate glare while at the beach. A UV filter can be left on your camera to not only block out unwanted UV light but also to protect the lens. Supplemental lenses and filters come in a variety of sizes to fit most lenses. Stepping rings will ensure a perfect fit. If your not sure what size lens filters you need, stop into Hampton Photo Arts with your camera and they will find the right filters for you.

Anyone who has taken digital photographs outside knows what a problem seeing the LCD viewing screen can be, especially in bright sunlight. Several after market problems have been designed for this problem. There are hoods that attach to the camera as well as hand held items that don’t require attaching anything to the camera. Once you own one of these viewing aids you’ll wonder how you got by without it.

A tripod or other steadying device is more important with today’s slim, lightweight cameras than ever. Slim lightweight cameras are incredibly portable. Unfortunately they’re virtually impossible to hold rock steady, especially with your arms extended which is required in order to view the LCD screen. Razor sharp images require a steady camera. Tripods are available at Hampton Photo Arts in a variety of sizes for a variety of budgets..

Canvas Printing

Printing on canvas is incredibly versatile and a great way to create a ready-to-hang image or artwork. Every canvas that we print  is protected with a UV coated acrylic finish to guard the print from dust, moisture and fading. Do you want your canvas stretched on bars or non-stretched? Framed or unframed? Customize the work to make it truly your own.

Nowadays just about anyone can take a good quality photographs with a digital camera. Or take a few hundred pictures and the chances are few will be good, and even one or two outstanding.

Here are a few tips, tricks and techniques on how to make art print poster ready photographs and print ready digital files. Don’t get overwhelmed, there is a lot of information here, but a lot of it is just intuitive. Well, a bit of patience will always help.

First thing – Photo Size

If you taking a digital photo of you family or friend the largest size you would print is usually 5 by 7 inches, maybe 8 by 10 at the most. Even small size digital photographs (2MB or less) are ‘good enough’ to create a decent print. But if you want to create prints that are 16 by 20, 20 by 24 inches or larger you need more pixels (in pixels 20 by 24 inches photo is actually about 40 times larger than 3 by 4 inches photo assuming they have the same resolution).

Learning to Paint Watercolors

Watercolor is an easy, fun medium for creating art.  Color theory, composition and design can be explored freely with watercolor paint, paper, and brushes.  Several techniques may be used with watercolors for varying effects including painting wet on wet, wet on dry, layering washes, and more.

Watercolor paper comes in cold press, hot press, and rough.  Rough paper has the most texture, and its hills and valleys can result in interesting effects when paint is added.  Hot press is the smoothest and has the finest texture.  Cold press has a moderate amount of texture and is the paper most commonly chosen by watercolor artists.

Watercolor paper comes in several weights ranging from 90 lb. to 300 lb. based on the pounds per ream of paper.  Most artists prefer to use at least 140 lb. paper.  Papers vary somewhat between manufacturers, so sampling different papers is advisable.  Paper can be purchased in pads, in blocks or in large sheets.  The large sheets are usually the most economical and can be torn into whatever size is desired.
